Saal Photobook Review
13/09/20
Digital photography has a whole host of benefits but one of the drawbacks is that most of the photos taken today are left cooped up in their digital state, so often we can never present our images to their greatest form. There is no substitute for a book to present a collection of our best images or to provide a record of an event. So, when I was approached recently by Saal Books to try out their Professional Line phonebooks with the incentive of a voucher for £100 I was eager to try them out.
The quality is absolutely stunning. The leather on the binding and back cover give this book a premium quality feel. The paper is heavyweight, since the pages are glued back to back giving a 368gm thickness, and the lustre finish was perfect. The printing was also excellent with great contrast and colour, something many manufacturers struggle with. I was somewhat sceptical about the lay flat concept thinking that it wouldn’t look as good as it sounded. But when I turned the page and saw it in person it looked great.
I have purchased several photo books previously but this is (by far) the best yet, though it was the highest quality professional line with a complimentary price. That being said, there is a difference between expensive and value for money and if you’re looking for a meticulously hand made book in order to present a portfolio of works or to display photographs of a special occasion then it is almost certainly worth it. My book was a 19 x 19", Professional Line lay flat book. 26 pages Matte paper with a premium black leather gift box. The full price, excluding my voucher and postage (£4.99), was £109.99.
